Our nature recovery scheme

Western Yar Nature Recovery Project at Kings Manor Farm, Isle of Wight

The Western Yar Nature Recovery Project at Kings Manor Farm is a Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) initiative dedicated to restoring and enhancing vital habitats across the Western Yar Estuary. As a registered and market-ready site, this ambitious scheme is designed to provide BNG credits while delivering world-class biodiversity improvements for priority bird species.

Why this project matters

Situated within the Solent and Southampton Water Special Protection Area, the Yar Estuary SSSI and the Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation, the project plays a crucial role in safeguarding saltmarsh, reedbeds, and wading bird populations. By transitioning existing agricultural land into a rich mosaic of neutral grassland, mixed scrub, traditional orchards and native hedgerows we are creating a long-term sanctuary for birds such as Lapwings, Curlews and Kingfishers.

A natural evolution of our historical stewardship work

With over 50 years of experience managing the Western Yar SSSI, the Kings Manor Farm team brings decades of expertise in environmental stewardship. This first phase of the project is already delivering medium and high distinctiveness BNG units, secured under an S106 agreement with the Isle of Wight Council in early 2024 (BNG National Register Site BGS-100624001).
